Biography

Dr. Salvador M. Guinjoan is a psychiatrist and neuropsychiatrist whose clinical work focuses on adults with depression, especially patients whose symptoms have not improved sufficiently with standard treatments. He has particular expertise in treatment-resistant depression, anhedonia, repetitive negative thinking, and depression occurring later in life, including cases in which mood symptoms overlap with cognitive, neurological, or medical concerns.

His approach begins with a careful diagnostic assessment, review of prior treatments, and attention to the patient’s medical history, medications, cognitive symptoms, sleep, anxiety, functional concerns, and personal goals. When appropriate, he helps patients and referring clinicians consider next-step treatment options, including referral for interventional psychiatry approaches such as transcranial magnetic stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy, ketamine/esketamine treatment, or other neuromodulation-based strategies.

Dr. Guinjoan also has a strong interest in clinical research studies aimed at improving care for patients with difficult-to-treat depression. When available and appropriate, he may discuss research opportunities that could help patients access carefully monitored, scientifically grounded approaches while contributing to better understanding of depression and brain circuit-based treatments.

His goal is to provide thoughtful, evidence-based, and individualized care, particularly for patients and families facing complex depressive illness, depression in older age, or uncertainty about what to do after several treatments have not worked.
