Biography
Dr. José Luis Bermúdez, is the Acting Dean of Texas A&M College of Dentistry, Professor of philosophy and the Samuel Rhea Gammon Professor of Liberal Arts at Texas A&M University.
He previously served as Dean of Texas A&M;s College of Liberal Arts and Associate Provost for Strategic Planning. He received the Association of Former Students Distinguished Achievement Award for Research in 2021.
Before joining Texas A&M in 2010, Bermúdez was at Washington University in St. Louis, where he was Professor of Philosophy, Director of the Center for Programs in Arts and Sciences, and Director of the Philosophy-Neuroscience-Psychology Program. Born in Bogotá, Colombia, he was educated in England at St. Paul's School, London and King’s College, Cambridge.
Bermúdez has eight single-author books and six edited volumes to his credit, among many other publications. He describes his research interests as interdisciplinary in nature, at the intersection of philosophy and the cognitive and behavioral sciences more generally.
His personal interests include managing for wildlife a ranch he owns in Robertson County, and training his horse for three-day eventing. He also participates in ultralong-distance bike races, such as the Iditarod Invitation, a 1,000 mile unsupported race across Alaska in winter.
When asked what drew him to philosophy in the first place, he says with a laugh, "I never answer that question; I can’t remember that far back!"
