TeamSTEPPS 3.0
TeamSTEPPS® 3.0 Training
Interprofessional TeamSTEPPS® 3.0 Training
Interprofessional TeamSTEPPS® Training—Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety—serves as a foundational and longitudinally integrated component of interprofessional education (IPE) at Texas A&M Health. Offered collaboratively by the Office of Interprofessional Practice, Education & Research (IPER) and the health colleges, this training establishes a shared language and core skill set that is reinforced and applied across subsequent IPE learning experiences.
Grounded in an evidence-based framework developed by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Department of Defense, TeamSTEPPS® equips learners with essential competencies in communication, teamwork, leadership, and patient safety.
Students complete standardized online modules followed by a facilitated training experience—delivered either fully online or in person—ensuring consistent preparation across all programs and locations.
During the live training, students engage in case-based learning, structured communication simulations (e.g., SBAR), and facilitated small-group discussions. A distinctive feature of the live online training is the use of curated video clips from popular media to illustrate breakdowns in teamwork, communication, and leadership—helping students apply TeamSTEPPS® tools in practical, engaging, and memorable ways.
TeamSTEPPS® principles are then embedded across subsequent IPE activities, allowing students to revisit and strengthen these skills over time in increasingly complex, practice-relevant settings.
